ARTIST STATEMENT
On SETS I utilize sharp angles, textures and layers to build pieces that are strong, secluded and unsuitable. I remake, reimagine as a reflexion on the meaning of intended purpose, repurpose and change. A kind of uncanniness, emotional detachment as a prop to adapt. Present yet inaccessible.
My artistic practice variously takes the form of scenography, photography, performance and sculpture. I explore the human condition through objects made for and against us. Botched ergonomics, off-the-shelf materials, often remnants from other projects. To seek, find, toss, replace, destroy and create, re create. An auto-fiction with tints of absurdity.
BIOGRAPHY
Multidisciplinary artist born in Lisbon. Formally an industrial designer, my professional experience began in the Stage Department at a prestigious theater in Caracas. I would continue designing spaces within the Art Department for film, television and editorial in the US and Spain as well as collaborating on the pages of architecture, travel and design editorials for Condé Nast in the areas of photographic editing, producing, set styling and authoring. Currently, the focus remains solely on film, sculpture and scenography.
From an early age and throughout my design school era I was influenced by film particularly Noir, french New Wave, realism and surrealism. My understanding of Dadaism through the work of Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Frank Ernst, whom, within their style, alternated between photography, drawing, graphic design, sculpture… I understood that artistic expression did not have to be limited to one discipline and that, on the contrary, when delving deep they feed from each other.
